Houston Municipal Water is Safe, But Is It Clean?

City water treatment plants add high levels of Chlorine and Chloramines (a combination of Ammonia + Chlorine) to kill bacteria and pathogens. While this disinfection keeps you safe from waterborne diseases, it wreaks havoc on your home, your skin, and your appliances.

The Hidden Cost of Chlorinated Water:

Custom Filtration Dispatched to Your Door

A filter that works in downtown Houston might not work for well water in Dayton. We
don’t guess. We arrive in a Mobile Warehouse fully stocked with testing kits and multiple
filter media types.

Our 3-Step Process:

THE MOBILE WAREHOUSE ADVANTAGE

When you call Blackmon for water filtration, we bring:
• Testing Equipment: TDS meters, chlorine test kits, pH meters, and taste testing
protocols.
• Filter Media: Standard activated carbon, catalytic carbon, and sediment
cartridges in multiple micron ratings.
• RO Components: Membranes, storage tanks, faucets, and 5-stage cartridge
sets for under-sink installations.
• Installation Hardware: Filter housings, mounting brackets, bypass valves, and
drain line components.
This allows us to complete most installations in a single visit—no waiting for parts to be ordered.

Why This Matters for Houston Homeowners

In Houston’s climate, A/C isn’t optional—it’s life safety equipment. Soft start technology means you can power your entire home’s cooling system with a smaller, more efficient generator. Instead of requiring a 30kW liquid-cooled unit ($22,000+), you might achieve the same comfort with a 24kW air-cooled unit ($14,000), saving $8,000 while still powering everything you need.

Filtration Needs by Neighborhood

Water quality varies dramatically across the Houston area. We customize filtration based on your specific source:

FAQS

Q: Will a filter affect my water pressure?

A: Not if it’s sized correctly. Blackmon Plumbing installs high-flow systems (10-15 GPM capacity) designed for 3-4 bathroom homes, so you can run multiple showers while the dishwasher and washing machine operate. Pressure drop is typically less than 3-5 PSI—unnoticeable in normal use.

Q: How often do I need to change the filters?

A: Whole-Home Carbon Systems: Replace the carbon media every 3-5 years
depending on usage and chlorine levels. There’s no maintenance required between
replacements. Reverse Osmosis Systems: Annual cartridge change (sediment, carbon
pre-filters, and membrane). The RO storage tank lasts 10+ years. We stock all
replacement cartridges on our trucks and offer service contracts for automatic annual maintenance.

Q: Does filtration remove hardness (scale)?

A: No. Filtration removes chemicals and contaminants. A Water Softener removes
minerals (calcium/magnesium). These are two different treatments for two different
problems. For total water quality, we often install a “Combo Unit” that includes both
softening (for scale prevention) and carbon filtration (for taste/chlorine removal). This provides soft, filtered water throughout your home.

Q: Can I install a filter myself?

A: While DIY filter systems are available, improper installation causes problems:
incorrect placement (restricts access for cartridge changes), inadequate drain lines
(flooding during backwash), undersized units (pressure loss), and improper bypass
valves (can’t isolate for maintenance). Professional installation ensures optimal performance, code compliance, and warranty protection.

Q: Will filtration remove lead or PFAS?

A: Carbon filtration provides some reduction but not complete removal. For maximum protection against heavy metals (lead, mercury) and PFAS “forever chemicals,” we recommend Reverse Osmosis systems for drinking water. RO removes 95-99% of these contaminants, providing the highest level of protection for your family.

Q: Does filtered water taste different?

A: Yes—dramatically better. Removing chlorine and chloramines eliminates the “pool
water” taste and chemical odor. Coffee and tea taste noticeably better. Ice cubes are
crystal clear instead of cloudy. Many customers report they finally enjoy drinking tap
water instead of buying bottled water.
