INTRODUCTION

Natural gas is safe, efficient, and affordable—until it leaks. Because gas piping is often hidden behind walls or buried underground, you cannot visually inspect it for damage. You must stress-test it.

At Blackmon Plumbing, we perform rigorous Gas Pressure Tests that exceed standard operating requirements. We don’t just “sniff” for leaks; we physically pressurize the system to prove it is airtight. Our testing reports are accepted by real estate inspectors, insurance adjusters, and city code enforcement officials.

When Do You Need a Gas Test?

Static Isolation Testing (For Complex Leaks)

If the system fails but we can’t find the leak, we use Isolation Testing. We install ball valves to section off the house (e.g., separate the yard line from the attic line). We test each section individually to narrow down the problem area without tearing down drywall.

The Testing Process: How We Do It

We follow the International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) protocols.

Real Estate: The "Yard Line" Risk

In Houston, the #1 failure point is the buried gas line running from the meter to the house (the Yard Line).

The Risk: In the 1970s, these were often bare steel. They corrode in our wet clay soil.

The Blackmon Promise: Our pre-purchase test specifically targets this line. Finding a leak here before you close can save you $3,000 – $5,000 in replacement costs.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Q: Will this damage my appliances?

A: No. We strictly disconnect or isolate all appliances before pressurizing. We never pump high pressure into a gas valve.

Q: How much does a test cost?

A: We charge a flat diagnostic fee for the test. If repairs are needed, we provide a separate quote.

Q: Do I need a permit?

A: For a real estate test, no. For a CenterPoint restoration, yes—we must pull a permit to schedule the city inspection.

Q: How long does a gas pressure test take?

A: The test itself takes 15-30 minutes of observation time, plus setup and appliance reconnection. Plan for 1-2 hours total for a complete residential test.

Q: What if my system fails the test?

A: We use electronic gas sniffers to pinpoint the exact location of the leak. If we can’t locate it immediately, we perform Static Isolation Testing to section off areas and narrow down the problem without demolition.
