INTRODUCTION

If you own a commercial building or a home with a sprinkler system, you likely receive a letter once a year from the City of Houston or your local MUD (Municipal Utility District). It states that your Backflow Prevention Assembly must be tested by a licensed professional within 30 days, or your water service will be terminated.

Don’t panic. Call Blackmon Plumbing. We are licensed BPAT (Backflow Prevention Assembly Testers). We treat this as a turnkey service: we drive to your property, perform the differential pressure test, place the official “Green Tag” on your device, and—most importantly—we mail the certification report to the water district for you.

Why Is Testing Mandatory?

How do you know when patching is pointless?

The Testing Process: Quick & Clean

You don’t even need to be home for us to test an exterior irrigation device.

What If It Fails? (The Red Tag)

About 20% of devices fail the annual test due to worn-out rubber parts or debris.

The “Upsell” Trap: Many testing-only companies will fail your device and tell you to call a plumber to replace it (costing you $800+).

The Blackmon Advantage: Because we are Master Plumbers, we carry repair kits on the truck. If your unit fails, we can usually rebuild it on the spot, re-test it, and pass it during the same visit.

Commercial & HOA Services

We manage compliance for large properties with multiple devices.

Restaurants: Testing for carbonators (soda machines) and grease trap lines.

HOAs: Volume pricing for neighborhood irrigation backflow testing.

Medical Facilities: Testing for critical isolation devices on X-ray and sterilization equipment.

FAQS

Q: My letter says “Overdue.” Will my water be cut off?

A: It is a real risk. If you are overdue, call us immediately. We can often perform the test within 24 hours and email a “Pending” confirmation to the city to halt any disconnect orders.

Q: How much is a backflow test?

A: We offer flat-rate pricing for the test and submission. If you have multiple devices at one location, we offer a quantity discount.

Q: Do I have to be there?

A: For outside devices (irrigation), no. As long as we have gate access, we can test it and email you the invoice and report. For indoor devices, we need access.

Q: How long does the test take?

A: Most backflow tests take 15-30 minutes. We arrive, hook up our gauges, run the pressure test, tag the device, and leave. The entire process is quick and non-disruptive.

Q: When should I schedule my annual test?

A: Schedule your test as soon as you receive the compliance letter. Don’t wait until the deadline—if your device fails and needs repair, you’ll need extra time to get it fixed and re-tested.
