Q: Does the city fix the leak?
A: Only if the leak is on their side of the meter (between the main line in the street and the meter box). If the leak is between the meter and your house, it is the homeowner’s responsibility. The meter is the dividing line.
Q: Will you destroy my driveway or landscaping?
A: Not usually. If the leak is under the driveway, we can often tunnel underneath it using directional boring techniques, avoiding the need to break concrete. If the pipe runs through mature landscaping, we’ll hand-dig carefully around root systems. We restore disturbed areas with matching soil and grass seed.
Q: Can I get a credit on my water bill for the leak?
A: Yes. Once we fix the leak, we provide you with a signed Repair Affidavit on company letterhead. You can submit this to the City of Houston (or your local municipality) to request a “Leak Adjustment” credit on your next bill. Most cities will credit the sewer charges, since the leaked water didn’t enter the sewer system.
Q: How long does a repair take?
A: A simple spot repair (3-foot section) typically takes 2-4 hours including excavation and backfill. A full line replacement (meter to house) can take 6-10 hours depending on distance and obstacles. We’ll give you an accurate time estimate once we’ve located the leak.
Q: Will I have water today?
A: Yes, in most cases. For spot repairs, we can usually restore your water the same day. For full replacements, we work efficiently to minimize downtime. If we can’t finish same-day, we’ll install a temporary connection so you have water overnight.
Q: What if roots come back?
A: If tree roots caused the failure, we can install the new pipe deeper (24 inches) or re-route it away from the tree. We also recommend root barriers (physical shields) if the tree is valuable and close to the line. PVC glue joints are root-resistant when properly installed.
